Wang Yi: We Should Adhere to Multilateralism in the New Era

time: 2022-05-07 19:31:38

On July 3, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with visiting President of the 72nd United Nations General Assembly Lajcak in Beijing. Wang Yi said that under the current international situation, how to uphold, improve and develop multilateralism is a major issue. Multilateralism in the new era should adhere to: Take win-win cooperation as the goal. Global challenges require a global response, and one or several countries cannot do it alone. It is even more unpopular to pursue the supremacy of national interests and transfer contradictions to the outside world. To achieve sustained peace and common development in the world, we must adhere to win-win, win-win and win-win, and advocate consultation, co-construction and sharing. It should be based on the rules of order. The purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations should be safeguarded. Every country should honor its commitments and fulfill its international obligations, and should not adopt the attitude of "using what is suitable and abandoning what is not suitable". All countries should strive to keep up with high international standards and, of course, take into account the actual situation of various countries and regions. Fairness and justice should be the main purpose. Without justice, multilateralism cannot stand; without fairness, multilateralism cannot go far. To ensure the broad and equal participation of all countries in global governance, the most important thing is to expand the representation and voice of developing countries and small and medium-sized countries in international affairs.

It should be guided by effective action. Multilateralism must not stop at words, but at deeds. What needs to be done now is for all countries to jointly safeguard the international system with the United Nations as the core, jointly safeguard the international trade rules with the WTO as the center, jointly promote the settlement of regional hot issues through dialogue and consultation, and jointly respond to global threats and challenges such as terrorism and climate change.
