The European Union will ban the use of sweeteners such as aspartame in refined bakery products.

According to the Official Journal of the European Union on January 23, 2018, the European Commission issued (EU) Regulation 2018/97 amending the list of sweeteners permitted in Fine bakery wares in Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. In accordance with Article 7 (C) of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, these sweeteners are no longer permitted in the food category "07.".2 Refined Baked Products, the sweeteners involved mainly include Acesulfame-K (E 950 Acesulfame K), Aspartame (E 951 Aspartame, Sodium cyclamate, calcium cyclamate (E 952 Cyclamic acid and its Na and Ca salts), sodium saccharin, potassium saccharin, calcium saccharin (E 954 Saccharin and its Na,K and Ca salts), sucralose (E 955 Sucralose), Neohesperidine dihydrochalcone (E 959 Neohesperidine DC), neotame (E 961 Neotame), sodium cyclamate (E 962 Salt of aspartame), and edwantin (E969 Advantame).This Regulation shall enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union. Refined baked goods containing these sweeteners before the entry into force of this Regulation may continue to be sold until they are sold out.
